The Permanent Resident Card is an essential document for Permanent Residents of Canada to travel and return to Canada by plane, train, bus or boat. The PR card must be valid when you travel. If your card is expired, you are still a permanent resident, but will need to have a valid PR Card to return to Canada.
To renew your PR card, you must have been physically present in Canada for a minimum of 730 days within the past five (5) years.
IRCC provides estimates of processing times on its website.

If you need to travel outside of Canada for an urgent reason, like a job opportunity, work related to your current job, serious illness, the death or the serious illness of a family member, you can apply for urgent permanent resident (PR).
